When and where does the Electronics Club meet?

The Electronics Club meets in the Science Department once a week after school from 3.30 to 4.30pm.

How much does it cost?

There is a joining fee of £2 to help cover the cost of materials such as wire and solder. Typical projects for beginners cost about £5, but you should be aware that complex projects can cost over £10. Payment may be by instalments, but it must be completed before you take the project home.

Will I be allowed to join?

The Club is open to pupils in all years at Kelsey Park School provided they are well-behaved and trustworthy. If you wish to join, your name will be put on the waiting list and your behaviour record will be checked with your Science teacher or form tutor.

Why is there a waiting list?

For safety the number of members must be limited and it is not possible to join the Club by just turning up.

What happens if someone misbehaves in the Club?

They will be asked to leave and their membership will be cancelled. Their joining fee will not be refunded.

What will I learn when I first join the Club?

You will be taught how to use a soldering iron, and be told some important safety precautions. Once you can produce consistently good soldered joints you will build a simple circuit which you can take home. The cost of this circuit is included in the joining fee. Many members learn how to solder and start to build the circuit on their first day.

Can I choose my own projects?

Yes. Once you have learnt how to use a soldering iron and built the first circuit, you can go on to build suitable projects of your own choice. The Club has a file of projects which have proved popular in the past, but as you become more experienced you may like to try projects from books and magazines.

What sort of projects can I build?

Example projects include alarms, a personal stereo amplifier, sound effects for models, electronic dice, a lie-detector, a model railway signal and Christmas decorations.

How do I choose a project?

New projects must be chosen at least a week before you want to start them so there is time to prepare the parts required. It is not possible to choose a project and start it on the same day!

Can I work on my projects at lunchtime?

Sorry, but it is not normally possible to work on your projects at lunchtime or at any other time apart from the Club. This is because it is difficult to arrange for you to be properly supervised.

Can I take an exam in Electronics?

There may be an opportunity to take the Test in Electronics if there is sufficient demand.

I may not be able to come to the Club each week, will that matter?

There is no need to attend the Club each week, but if you don't attend for a long time (such as half a term) you may lose your place to a new member.

I was a member of the Club two years ago, can I re-join?

Yes, but you may have to wait if the Club is full. For confirmations,  mail us at magnumpro@gmail.com.

I'd like to be a member, how do I join?
